On Tuesday 26th June 2018, Prison Watch Sierra Leone visited the Female Correctional Centre at Willoughby Lane Brookfields and donated both food and non- food items to inmates.
The items donated include: sanitary pads, toothpaste, soap, cloths, soft drinks and bread.
Handing over the items, Esther Kamara, who is the Psychosocial Coordinator for PWSL said they were there in observance of the United Nation’s ‘International Day of Torture’. She enlightened that, that day was set aside in order to remember those behind bars.
“inmates will get to understand how people outside the walls care about them (inmates)”.
“That is why we came today to make this little donation to the female Correctional Centre. This donation is also being exhibited in Bo and Kenema female Correctional Centres as well,” she explained.
She furthered that the donation was courtesy of the Dignity Danish Institute against Torture.
While extending words of appreciation on behalf of the Director General SLCS to PWSL, Superintendent Seray Cowan, who is the officer in charge of the Freetown Female Correctional Centre, said the gesture had come at the right , adding “inmates will get to understand how people outside the walls care about them (inmates)”.
In her statement, the Deputy Commanding Officer Female- Mrs. Irene Sesay observed that the day of ‘International Torture’ was worth remembering given the number of inmates who suffer at the hands of some prison officers in other parts of the world. She thanked Prison Watch Sierra Leone for its generosity.
